Myra Jean Rushton
Seneca, SC
Myra Jean Rushton grew up in North Charleston, SC and graduated from North Charleston High School as Salutatorian. She later earned a bachelor’s in business at Southern Wesleyan University and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
In the early years of her career she worked in Human Resources for the Civil Service in Charleston, SC as well as in administration at the US Forest Service. After retiring from the Navy as a Benefits Counselor for veterans, she moved her family to Tamassee, SC where she began working at Engelhard, now BASF, and was among the first employees to be hired locally. She retired as a cost accountant in the Maintenance Department soon after her first granddaughter was born.
She is survived by her daughter, Renee Warren Gahan and two granddaughters Marion and Aubrey Gahan of Clemson. Also, she leaves behind her sister, Myrtle Rushton Smith of Cottageville, SC and cousin Sue Ann Karter Shealy of Wagner, SC as well as a large extended family from Greenwood-Augusta to Charleston. Her family and friends far and wide will miss her and will remember her stories, her earthy humor as well as her wisdom and listening ear.
She was creative and at different points in life practiced at woodcarving, ceramics, cross-stitching, writing stories and poems and played piano as a young girl. She was always reading something and enjoyed telling stories and fascinated with the characters. She was known to bowl for a time, taught adults to read and helped people complete their taxes. She took in people who needed shelter and refuge off and on through her life and had two marriages. Bill Griffin, however, was the love of her life who passed from this world in 2008.
