On the morning of July 31, Maxine Woods Griffin passed away quietly in her sleep. At the time she was in the hospital, because more than three weeks earlier she had a fall and broke her hip and arm. So, she was in a safe and quiet place when time stopped, as she took her last breath.
My momma was born on January 10, 1932, the fourth daughter of Elsie Woods Woods, and Henry Macmillan “Mack” Woods. Her sisters were Frances, Doris, Gloria, and Fostine. Doris is now the only surviving sister and she turns 98 on August 15.
Memories of my momma is how caring and giving she was. She touched so many lives. She rarely sat down because she was always “doing” for others. Momma was constantly making and giving away beautiful handmade wreaths and craftwork. She was well known for her cooking and baking, with her latest being walnut cake.
Momma was born in Beaufort County and it’s where she spent most of her life. In 2003 she moved to Walhalla, SC to be closer to her youngest daughter and my sister Sarah.
Momma is survived by her sister Doris Woods Small, and her daughters Cassie Griffin Welsh, and Sarah Griffin Bowers (James), and numerous nieces and nephews. Momma was predeceased by husband, Herbert “Bert” Hayes Griffin.
A special “Thank you” to hospice who made her last hours of life so peaceful. So much love, and so many memories.
